Banned Books

For this university brief I had to design a an identity / scheme for a series entitled Banned Books comprised of books that have at some point been banned by the authorities of a particular country. This scheme had to be implemented across three books from the series and in-store posters to promote the series.

Books

The scheme I devised for the books comprises a wrap-around cover that the buyer has to tear the fore-edge off of to get at the book. This outer cover conceals an illustrative inner-cover.

Posters

The posters continue the concealment theme of the books and logo.

District 87

As part of a magazine design brief in second year my idea for the masthead of Obsatcle, a mag about free running/parkour, developed into a highly adaptable display typeface which I used not only for the masthead but also the headlines throughout the mag’s design. I called the face District 87 because it fits together like the blocks or districts of a city, and I was born in ’87.

KICKS: Classic Sports Shoes

Another of the briefs I undertook for my degree was to design the promotional material for a fictional exhibition.

I decided to design material for an exhibition of classic trainers which I titled 'KICKS'. The brief was to create an Exhibition Guide, Private View invite, Website and some other form of promo material.

Exhibition Guide:

Private View Invite:

For the invite to the Private View I designed a way of posting a pair of shoelaces with the event details on.

Website:

Additional Promo: Shoe tags for shoe shops

Welcome

Welcome to tjc design, a blog of the design work by Timothy John Cottrell (me).

In the coming days weeks and months i will be letting you see the design work i have done so far.

The Wheel of Time

Here is my design for the frankly brilliant ' The Wheel of Time' fantasy series by the late Robert Jordan. This was a self-initiated project done during my degree. I designed the covers for the first three in the series and the spines for all ten of the books that had then been published. I also designed the layout for the prelims and prologue of the first book, and some other chapter opening pages.
